UX is one of the most misunderstood when it comes to the modern business world as a result mistakes are commonly found everywhere. A few, who get the term, leverage it to their competitive advantages like clubhouse and Snapchat founders.
— The term itself has a strong negative connotation. 2 out of 3 meaning of the word are
– The product leads have a faulty understanding of what UX design is. They either think of it as
???? That’s how they fail to see UX design as delivering a unique experience that no other competitors did think of
???? When you’re obsessed to deliver a fresh experience, then you can use cutting technology to your advantage
⚠️ Many product leaders think exactly the opposite. i.e. How can I ship more features?!
Below are some of the most common UX Mistakes for you to avoid
UX is not a one-man’s job, you need a team to get the work done properly. One person cannot just do all the work, it’s time-consuming and can lead to poor results since a lot of things might be overlooked.
Each person in the team has their role and responsibility. In the team, there should be a UX project lead, UX researcher, UX prototyper, User interface designer. A team of professionals makes a lot of difference to progress and efficiency compared to working as an individual.
This is the biggest misconception between UX and UI. It’s a shame that these two are usually interchangeable when they are different terms.
The user interface is a big part of user experience design same with the prototype, but they all differ in terms. UI and prototype are part of UX, not the other way around.
When designing UX, these 2 are considered to produce high-quality results. UX Design is all about having a unique strategy to design a fresh experience no other competitors have offered before.
One of the crucial things that you need to know when designing UX is who your users are.
Remember that you are creating a design that will work best to the needs of the user. You are designing for people who need your app, not based on your perception, you think the user needs.
This is the main reason why we are conducting research and building personas so we can determine what works best for your users.
Iteration allows you to create and test your ideas. The process is simple, after generating the ideas, time to test it but not just once.
Do it in as many versions as you can so you can compare the results and get the best output. More iteration will bring your powerful results.
Not only is this unethical practice but this defeats your purpose as a designer. Copying designs is a big NO even if it looks great.
If a solution works for your competitor, there’s no guarantee that it will work for your users.
Remember that you need to back up your design with data from your research.
This also goes with the trends, do not just join the bandwagon. That doesn’t mean it’s a trend you have to do it.
Create your design based on your user needs, data you gathered from your research, and overall results.
Overwhelming your users with too many functionalities will only result in a low conversion. Simplicity is the key.
Do not sacrifice the functionality overlooks, you should create a design that works best for your users.
Your creative design and functionality must be balanced. No one wants a boring website with too much functionality.
Your interface must be easy and convenient for your users to navigate, not complicated.
The perfect example of this is Netflix (read our previous blog about how Netflix uses UX). So you understand how aesthetics and functionality can drive a great user experience.
User research and testing can mislead you if you ask interviewees directly what they want, instead of observing them.
It defeats the overall purpose of why you are conducting user research. Understand the needs of your user and the way they use your design. Bad or good, get the necessary details you need to complete the work or even revise it to something better.
This might be time-consuming but this gives you a guarantee that your design works well for your target users.
User testing should detect mistakes and prevent them on the actual design. Ignoring the signs may lead to poor product quality and customer satisfaction.
If you are designing for an eCommerce business that needs a shipping feature, make sure that it works well for your user. If you give them long forms and too many options this might irritate them and just leave it. You are creating a path for conversion to make it as easy as possible.
This is like telling a story without a proper beginning, middle, and ending. Your main character is shallow or too boring. Other characters don’t contribute to the overall story and you as a reader feel confused through the story.
At every iteration of your application, you need to ship a whole experience. This is crucial. If you make mistakes on this, you may end up shipping less but the entire experience makes sense to your users.
Consider this article as an eye-opener to all designers, when creating the perfect design. This is just a basic guide but this makes your UX journey easy. UX mistakes can be prevented. With proper learning, training, and experience, we are sure that you can avoid these kinds of mistakes.
